Montevideo, Uruguay (Feb 27)

Image
Montevideo, capital of Uruguay (pop. 1.5 m), is a charming little sister to Buenos Aires (pop. 15.5 m) and lies basically across the Rio de La Plata from it. Clean and walkable, Montevideo seems designed for tourists, with pedestrian streets snaking from the port up the hill to the Plaza Independencia, the main square. Water views on both sides of the small peninsula abound. Mercado del Puerto, packed with restaurants serving parrilla, or a variety of grilled meats Various architectural styles  Gate of the original Citadel of Montevideo with Salvo Tower behind Constitution Square and Cathedral Independence Square Solis Theater Zabala Square

Buenos Aires, Argentina’s cosmopolitan capital, is known as the “Paris of South America.” We spent two glorious days here and were feted one evening with an extravaganza showcasing tango and other performance arts. Days were spent walking and touring sites we remembered from previous visits. Such as: Casa Rosada (their White House). Bill kept singing “Don’t Cry for me Argentina” in memory of Eva Peron La Recoleta, famous cemetery (where Eva is buried) and the fancy neighborhood around it La Boca, and colorful Caminito Street. Birthplace of tango San Telmo.
