Sitka, Alaska (July 5)

Sitka, capital of Russian America from 1808-1867, was the site of the transfer of Alaska to the United States from Russia in 1867 at the cost of about 2 cents per acre or $7.2 million. The city is located in a gorgeous bay dotted with islands and backdropped by majestic mountains. Russian, native Tingit, and American influences permeate the town.

The weather was bright and sunny: cool, crisp, and clear, perfect for a long walk through the town and the adjoining Sitka National Historical Park (Totem Park) followed by a zodiac ride out to Fin Island for a crab feast ( our most expensive ship-sponsored tour yet!). But on the zodiac we saw sea lions, otters, and a congress of eagles (about 50 of them!).
