Nha Trang, Vietnam (June 5)

Nha Trang, the easternmost big city of VietNam, hugs a beautiful bay dotted with silky white sandy beaches, offshore islands, and surrounded by mountains. It’s hard to believe that fierce fighting took place here during the US-Vietnam war. Now, Nha Trang is a major tourist center for Vietnamese, Chinese, international backpackers, and the occasional cruise ship. A beachfront promenade highlights the location.

As usual, we grabbed a taxi and had a private tour, visiting a French-built cathedral, 8th century Po Nagar Chan Towers, interesting coastal rock formations, Long Son Buddhist temple built in 1963 to honor the monks and nuns who battled the government of the time, and the labyrinthine central market. Bill was thrilled we got a banh mi sandwich (imagine a Vietnamese Subway, but tastier!)

  1. So happy you have kept the blog up. I look forward to going back and reading and looking at the photos for the ones I missed. Banh mi are very good sandwiches. I bet they taste much better there than the ones you can get in the U.S. The Vietnamese poboy!

  2. Absolutely beautiful location; still, I'm glad we didn't get drafted and fight there. Note - I just had a great Banh Mi right here in Santa Rosa. That crispy exterior to the bun tops it off. FB
