Kobe, Japan (June 17-18)

If you come by sea, Kobe, on the southeastern side of Japan’s main island of Honshu, is the gateway to Kyoto, Nara, and Osaka.  Since we had been to those places ages ago, we decided to explore Kobe itself. This port city of some 1.5 million dates back to the 3rd century when the Ikuta Shrine was founded. With WWII damage and a huge earthquake in 1995, most of the city has now been rebuilt with modern shopping malls, apartments, and office buildings. A small part of a collapsed wharf serves as a memorial to the 6,500 people killed during the quake.

We walked through blocks of modern shopping malls and covered streets, ate street food in Chinatown, saw several shrines and a beautiful garden, and had Kobe beef for dinner. Consummate (exhausted) tourists!
