Keelung/Taipei, Taiwan (June 11-12)
Keelung, the main port for Taipei and second largest in Taiwan after Kaohsiung, is essentially a “suburb” of Taipei. Known as the Rainy City, Keelung is famous for its night market and beautiful temples. The first afternoon we took a cab with friends into Taipei (see below) and wandered in Keelung’s night market that evening. The next morning we walked up the hill in the drizzle to see several Keelung temples, including the 74-foot statue of Guan Yin, the goddess of compassion and mercy.
The main purpose of our jaunt into Taipei was to eat dimsum and steamed pork soup dumplings at the Michelin starred original Din Tai Fung. (There’s now a chain of them scattered mostly around the US west coast). We got a takeout order, taxied to the Chiang Kai-shek memorial hall, and ate in light drizzle. Final stop was the famous National Palace Museum. On the drive back to Keelung, we passed the Taipei 101 building (101 floors) shaped like a bamboo stalk, and once the tallest building in the world.
