Hiroshima is synonymous with the use of the first nuclear weapon, the atomic bomb “Little Boy” dropped here on August 6, 1945, that killed around 160,000, flattened the city, and hastened Japanese surrender. The Peace Memorial Park is on the site of Ground Zero, and the shell of the Prefecture Industrial Promotion Hall is a stark reminder of the devastation. Now a booming city of almost 1.3 million, Hiroshima is home to a strong industrial base including Mazda, Mitsubishi, and Kawasaki.
We visited the Peace Park and its museums, the mostly ruined Hiroshima Castle, and the restored 17th century Shukkeien Garden with its “straddling rainbow bridge.”And, at a local eatery, we lunched on okonomiyaki, a local pancake/omelet/noodle dish, which is as fun to say as it is to eat!
Thank you for sharing these.
