Punta del Este, Uruguay (Feb 24)

Punta del Este, Uruguay, is an internationally known resort attracting Latin and North American jet setters.  It has been called “the Pearl of the Atlantic” and likened to Monaco, the Hamptons, and Miami. Surprisingly developed, it boasts multiple high rises bordering beautiful beaches on both the bay and Atlantic sides of the peninsula. Some residential neighborhoods and art museums rival those anywhere. Punta has hosted yacht races, Formula E races, and the launching of the Uruguay Round of trade negotiations that ultimately created the World Trade Organization.

Because we anchored off shore, we took a city-sponsored tender to the pier.

Two of the beautiful beaches, lined with condos and restaurants.


Sculptures on the water front, including “The Hand” fingers rising out of the sand, a symbol of the city, and a whale tail.



Casapueblo, a fantastical former residence of local artist Paez Vilaro with incredible views down the coast. Now a museum and hotel.

    Finally got on. 😉 ...Amazing journey! Love the photos (esp artworks & nature)... Interesting sharing to see which cities survive richly on travelers & glad that you got a chance to see some offbeat, truly impoverished reality that's in much of the world. Makes us more aware & appreciative of our lives, as well as want to help others more... wherever. 😏

Notes: We do not have great connectivity when we are at sea, so you all get a break during those days! Also, if/when you post a comment, please add your name, otherwise we have no idea who wrote it. We left San Francisco Sunday 1/15 when it was cold, rainy and foggy.  After a day at sea, got to Ensenada, Mexico today to scattered showers, but hired a taxi and went to Dad and Korki's old place on the beach which brought back lots of memories and had a tour around Ensenada. January 10: T-minus 5 days

Acajutla, El Salvador

El Salvador was our last stop in Central America before heading further south. The 7 hour land tours departed at 6:45 a.m., so once again we opted instead to take a local shuttle around the area. Acajutla is a very industrial port, and fairly impoverished- a dose of reality adding new  perspective as to why people want to leave. Also makes one thoughtful and grateful for what we have.
