Punta Arenas, Chile (Feb 14)
Punta Arenas - literally “sandy point” - was founded as a penal colony and settled by shepherds so that Chile could claim this desolate area. Now home to some 130,000, Punta Arenas is only the second “free port” of Chile (see Iquique). It sits on a strategic spot on the Straits of Magellan, and is the launch pad for many trips to Antarctica and the wilds of Patagonia.
Arrival in Punta Arenas
Charming town center
Main square with Magellan Statue. It’s good luck to rub the foot of one of the characters at the statue’s base.
Monument to shepherds
Cathedral with Kendie
Valentine flowers: Joseph and Bob
From Suzanne - Bill must have had to up his walking today to offset all this luscious food. Happy Valentine's Day to my two favorite Straits of Magellan Explorers!
