Arica, Chile
Arica, Chile, lies 11 miles south of the Peruvian border, and also serves as a major port for landlocked Bolivia. A very arid place at the edge of the Atacama desert, the landscape is eerily lunar. Highlights included a church designed by Gustave Eiffel, Tutelar statues (or guardian spirits) in the middle of nowhere, and Geoglyphs dotting some hillsides. We arrived on a saint’s day feted by a colorful parade and marching bands.
Cathedral of St.Marcos designed by Eiffel in 1876.
El Morro rock towering over the harbor. Note all the birds on the abandoned fishing boats.
Tutelar statues and lunar landscape.
Geoglyphs on hillsides.
Beautiful cathedral, and love the guardian spirit statues!!
